GODLY DISCIPLINE

“God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.” JOHN 3:17 NIV

Have you ever made a mistake and been harshly judged by other believers? Experiencing someone’s self-righteous condemnation can be absolutely disheartening, if not downright painful.

Many people caught in sin have turned away from Christ as a result of being cruelly attacked by other believers when they could have—and should have—been restored by godly, loving discipline. Sadly, some believers miss the fact that discipline is always directed toward a specific behavior and is rooted in compassion.

Condemnation, on the other hand, is directed toward the person and is often based on misplaced anger, fear, or hatred. Spitefully accusing someone because of their bad choices could result in even more bondage and resentment in their lives rather than helping that individual know and embrace God’s liberating grace and love.

Therefore, whenever you feel led to rebuke another person, make sure you’re motivated by love and are committed to helping them find freedom from their sinful behavior. Remember, Jesus came to free the captives, and that’s to be your aim as well.

Lord, make me an instrument of Your peace leading others to You, amen.

In His presence . . . extend God’s grace toward others.
